I found a used McCormick IH 2 Row 56 Corn Planter today. It looks to be in good condition. I forgot my camera so no photo. There are 2 plastic seed containers and one large metal fertilizer box. The guy is asking $400 CAD. There are about 10 different seed plates included. The owner said he just replaced the hydraulic cylinder and hoses. I can't seem to find any info on Google about this planter. Anyone have any knowledge of this planter? I am looking to plant sweet corn, sunflowers, bean, and peas. Steve

International 56 Planter
Feb 13, 2010 First planter I bought after taking over the family farm was a 6x36' # 56 planter. It was a big step up from the IH #451 4x38' planter we had before. Mine was a disc opener planter though they were also available in a 'runner' planter if I remember correctly. Far as seed spacing they did a fairly good job as long as everything was in good shape. International 56 corn planter, two row 38' style, pull type, has seed, dry fertilizer and insecticide, double disc seed openers, has a hyd lift cylinder, paint is good, always stored inside, price $2995.

It was a plate planter and not long after the IHC air planter came out and I remember dad saying he was glad he got a good plate planter instead of the one that blew air.I was never around it much but I remember it was a dependable planter, easy to change row widths on,Almost fault free. He set it on drill ,1 med. round seed every 7-8 inches and it very seldom missed. It had liquid starter attachments and the liquid tanks were mountd on the tractor and were fibreglass which was a plus ,no corrosion. You had to keep the fertilizer openers or any metal that the fertilizer touched clean and well oiled when not being used.I've seen a lot of 4 rows and heard a 2 row was made.

They had so many complaints on the air planters they brought the 56 plate planter back out. I am not a IH expert but this is what I was told. I used a IH 56 planter for a few years and it was a good plate planter. If it had double disk openers I would have kept it. I replaced it with a JD 7000 in 1976.

Very reliable, and easy to use/work on. For me, so far, parts have been easy to find. Not the greatest at seed depth control on steeper hills. Need a decent tillage job on field before planting. Good machine, for low, upfront cost, in my opinion.

Couldn't always get the right marker to fall, and we were CONSTANTLY fixing the fertilizer drive mechanism...chains, sprockets, shafts... It did plant decently, if you could find the right plate for your seed, and you kept the speed down. Would NEVER go back to one, after having a couple JD 7000's. (4RW, now 6 RN)

Especially with small irregular shaped seed which this sweet corn I plant is. Taped rows and every other hole shut in the corn drum and stuck pumpkins in the ground with it last week... Without a hiccup. On the 56 I'd pay attention to the disk openers and row units to make sure they are not flat worn out. Those disk openers are $33 from IH, each , without bearing... $40 w/ bearing... 2 per row and 2 per fert opener, do the math. The seed furrow runners behind the disks have a shape to create a V in the furrow... They wear out too. Otherwise... bent up markers can be a PITA to get to work, make sure the tongue isn't tweaked and that all of the gears are intact. If it's been well taken care of and greased then it shouldn't be overly worn out.
